The History and Growth of Albertsons
Joe Albertson opened his first store at the corner of 16th and State Streets in Boise with a then-remarkable 10,000 square feet of space. His innovations set the standard: an in-store bakery, a magazine rack, a nut roaster, and even a sound system playing music for shoppers. The store’s slogan, “Albertson’s—It’s a pleasure,” reflected a commitment to the shopping experience that would drive expansion for decades.
Through mergers, acquisitions, and organic growth, Albertsons became a national powerhouse. A particularly significant chapter was the 2015 merger with Safeway, which brought together two of America’s most iconic grocery chains under the Albertsons Companies umbrella. This created a diverse family of regional banners, each with its own local identity while benefiting from the scale and resources of a national organization.
Today, Albertsons Companies continues to evolve, focusing on omnichannel retail, private label brands like Signature Select and O Organics, and community giving through the Albertsons Foundation.
The Albertsons Family of Stores
One unique aspect of Albertsons Companies is its collection of regional grocery banners. While you might shop at an Albertsons in Idaho or a Vons in Southern California, you’re part of the same company family. Here are some of the well-known names:

Jewel-Osco
Acme Markets
Shaw’s

Tom Thumb
Randalls

Each banner tailors its product selection and store experience to its local community while offering the quality and value Albertsons Companies is known for.
